While planning to purchase the HDTV (high definition television), one has to decide on whether is is plasma or LCD technology, the size of the television, higher pixels means better picture quality. LED TV is not a distinct technology but is an LCD TV with LED backlights. Then there are several features provided in the HDTV which also needs to be considered before a final decision is reached. The electronics giant, Sony, is one of the leading companies offering such televisions. Five of their products under ‘Bravia’ has been reviewed for the benefit of prospective clients.
Sony Bravia KDL – HX850
The HX580 series (46″ & 55″ LED) has a wide range of features with accurate colors with picture quality being crystal clear. The frame is attractively designed and energy efficient. It has an edge to edge gorilla glass giving a sleek look. The stand is arched shiny black plastic supporting the 47-pound cabinet, with easy swivel. There is every type of I/O connections in the back. Internet connectivity is both wired and wireless. Colour accuracy is good but higher contrast would have been better. As it uses active 3D technology, it needs battery powered shutter glasses to work. Using only 47 watts of power, it is the energy efficient and environment friendly television. However, prices around $2,600, it is slightly on the higher side and 3D glasses are not part of the package.
Sony Bravia KDL – 42EX440
This is a 42 inch no – frills, budget HDTV having a solid colour quality and has 1080 pixels resolution. The picture looks good for viewing from all angles. It has a matte black cabinet with a rectangular base supporting 29 pounds. However, there is no swivel adjustments. Thought the I/O ports are limited but still the major ones are two HDMI inputs, a USB port, digital / analog audio outputs, VGA video input, coaxial jack and A/V inputs. However, there is no WiFi or Ethernet connectivity. Two speakers of 8-watts are rear facing. Priced at $549.99, it is quite affordable but has a low contrast ratio. Though it lacks some features of the standard HDTVs but its price is quite appealing.
Sony Bravia KDL – 60EX645
The picture quality in HDTV is very important but in this model, there is an excess of features but cannot make it up for certain color issues and below par black levels. Even then, the model has integrated Wifi, various online functions with plenty of streaming apps (including a browser) and standard ports on the back. With a weight of 43.2 pounds and at 2.5″ deep, it is more along the bulky side but then it can be wall mounted. The design is relatively attractive for the price of $999.00 but the picture quality is suspect.
Sony Bravia KDL-46HX750
KDL-46HX750 is available in both 46″ and 55″ sizes and offer accurate colors which is excellent for an LCD HDTV. One need not mess around with the calibration for viewing the image. The frame style is subdued but has an elegant look and very comfortable to use. The features of this model are quite high as compared to others in this range. Being the smart TV and priced at $1599 (46″) and $1899 (55″), there is full access to internet apps, media stored, portal for Sony’s entertainment network, online content through LAN and built- in WiFi adapter. The colour performance is very good though the black level performance is quite unimpressive. It has very easy navigable user interface but the smart TV response is inadequate.
Sony Bravia XBR – 46HX929
This 46 – inch model has deep black levels raising the overall image quality. It has an accurate shadow detail and has a lot of video processing options. It has built in WiFi with 3D support and a wide range of web apps. Priced at $2499. 00, this expensive model has deteriorating picture when viewed from off angles. It has a thin exterior design having gorilla glass and the internet suite has numerous streaming services / widgets. There is minimal crosstalk in the 3D images.
Summary:
All the models in the Sony Bravia LCD and Plasma have different features and image quality. One has to primarily check the picture quality which is based on the pixel size. Power consumption is another factor along with the black levels and shadow details. Before deciding on a particular model, visit one of the Sony stores for physically viewing the HDTV.
